Research has shown that smoking during pregnancy causes health problems for both mothers and babies, such as pregnancy complications, premature birth, low-birth-weight infants, stillbirth, and infant death (CDC, 2002) CDC also reports that children exposed to secondhand smoke experience high rates of espiratory symptoms and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). However many providers may not screen for risk and refer to support resources to address same.
